I recently stumbled upon Julia’s Poppies Design and have completely fallen in love with everything about Jamie’s style, designs and her gorgeous website! After hours of wandering around this virtual treasure trove gathering inspiration, one ingenious idea in particular bowled me over- The Pillowcase Dress…
“Oh the pillowcase dress! There are so many darling pillowcases floating around out there and in need of a little TLC.”

To make your own pillowcase dress all you will need is;
A pillowcase (Many pillowcases are sheer, so it may be an idea to double line with another solid colour).
Needle & thread or sewing machine
Elastic, string, lace, etc

STEP ONE Use a seam ripper or scissors to cut the “top” of the pillowcase and trim to the desired length. The “bottom” is the already hemmed opening and the “top” is wear your head will be.

There are endless options for the dress style. With this yellow pillowcase I made it strapless, but with straps you’d follow similar steps.
STEP TWO [FOR STRAPLESS] Fold over the top and sew, leaving a small opening to feed the elastic through.

STEP THREE Connect your elastic to a safety pin.

STEP FOUR Feed the elastic through the top hem.

STEP FIVE Pull tight and sew the elastic to the desired length…make sure to measure and mark your size before you put the elastic through the dress.

[WITH STRAPS] Make 2″ slits on each side and sew a hem on the front and back, separately. Use your strap material of choice and feed through the hem and tie bows on shoulders to connect. Once you have the dress on, you may have to make longer slits on the sides to allow more movement.

“This was a super easy project and little to no sewing experience is required… just experiment and have fun!” Jamie, Julia’s Poppies Design
